Chemist Thomas Miranda of IU South Bend has published a memoir of his early days in Hawaii, where he witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which precipitated the United States entry into World War II.
Growing Up in Hawaii is written with a young audience in mind—Miranda’s own grandchildren, in fact—but the book is also a window into the experiences of a man who lived through the Great Depression and, ultimately, brought his family success.
Miranda was born on a sugar plantation, Ewa Hill, Oahu, and lived in Honolulu until moving to California. There he graduated from San Jose State College, later acquiring a graduate degree in business administration from IU South Bend and a doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. Miranda has worked for both the O’Brien and Whirlpool corporations as director of research and as staff scientist respectively, and was editor of the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology’s Journal of Coatings Technology.
