The papers of IU mathematician Vaclav Hlavaty, housed in the Lilly Library in Bloomington, contain a long correspondence between Hlavaty and Albert Einstein concerning the mathematical proofs for Einstein’s theories. A famous Hlavaty quote: “The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith.”

IU Bloomington conferred 1,712 degrees during its commencement Dec. 17 at Assembly Hall. Charles H. Webb Jr., retired dean of the IU School of Music, received the President’s Medal for Excellence at that time.

The medal is modeled after the jewel of office worn by IU’s president at ceremonial occasions and was first was presented in 1985, to members of the Beaux Arts Trio.
