Scales to direct Entrepreneurship Center at IU East

Scales

Tim Scales, business and economics, has been named interim director of the Entrepreneurship Center. He will be instrumental in the design of the center, which is aimed at stimulating economic growth in the region through the development of entrepreneurial skills and the creation and support of the university/community projects involving students, faculty and business leaders. He will be using the spring semester to establish the organization of the center and the responsibilities of the director.

Scales has been a part of the business community since 1992 as the vice president and marketing director for First Bank Richmond. He has been an adjunct instructor in economics, management and marketing at IU East since 1998.

The Entrepreneurship Center has been in the planning stages for many months. “There was a felt need to have an entity that would participate directly in the economic issues of the region,” explained Vice Chancellor Larry Richards. “Most entrepreneurial centers focus on starting a business—this center will have a broader mission in that it will also focus on infusing creativity into businesses of all types.”

The first initiative for the center began in the spring of 2004 with a Lilly Foundation grant. Funding helped the campus begin a chapter of the Students In Free Enterprise, a global, non-profit organization that helps college students develop skills for business entrepreneurship.
