| An estimated 515 degrees will be conferred Tuesday, May 11, at IU Kokomo during the campus’ 35th commencement.
IU lists 464 degree candidates at the Kokomo campus, including degree recipients from December 2003, and candidates for May, June and August 2004. Purdue University’s School of Technology Kokomo expects to confer 51 degrees.
IU President Adam Herbert will preside. IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth J. Person and Thomas Capozzoli, director of Purdue University programs at Kokomo, will be on stage to congratulate the graduates.
District 30 State Rep. Ron Herrell of Kokomo will receive the IU Kokomo Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award; he is a 1980 graduate in fire science technology.
The university will confer the honorary doctor of humane letters degree upon Tavis Smiley, host of current affairs interview programs on both National Public Radio and Public Broadcasting Service television. An author and philanthropist, Smiley is the son of Joyce Smiley and Emory Smiley, both of Kokomo.
Other guests invited to join the platform party include the IU trustees, IU Kokomo Advisory Board, the IU Kokomo Alumni Association president; the alumni outreach coordinator for the Purdue Alumni Association; IU Kokomo academic deans and chairpersons; senior administrators for both universities; and representatives of the graduating class.
