IU gets a new national center for Central
Asian languages
With Central Asia taking on critical national and global significance in the past few months, Congress approved an unprecedented 26 percent increase in funding to support international studies programs nationwide. Through a Title VI grant, IU will launch a new Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Afghanistan Language Resource Center in August on the Bloomington campus.

Easing the science teacher shortage
An NSF report released last week voices a continued concern for the quality of mathematics and science education in grades K-12; America's high school students continue to lag in international achievement measures in science and mathematics. A pilot program at the IU School of Education in Indianapolis is a step toward filling the gap in teacher support for Hoosier middle and high school science teachers.The state has mandated a Transition to Teaching program at all institutions that educate teachers by the fall of 2003.
