Law basics being taught in Bloomington schools by first-year IU law students

First-year students at the IU School of Law-Bloomington have been instructing local fifth graders on the basics of American law.

Volunteer teachers through Outreach for Legal Literacy focus on American history and the U.S. Constitution in the first semester.

During the second semester, the pupils prepared for a mock trial, the crowning event of the year. The pupils came to the law school for the trial.

The program was begun in 1994 by Aviva Orenstein, an IU law professor, and more than 100 law students have taught in Bloomington elementary schools during that time.
