The IU Writers' Conference in Bloomington is the second oldest conference of its type in the nation. It was initiated in 1940 by author Cecilia Hendricks and Herman B Wells. An evening reading series open to the public is planned June 23-27 at the Indiana Memorial Union.

Each year during Cream and Crimson weekend (June 14-16) on the Bloomington campus, IU recognizes outstanding alumni with the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Since its inception in 1953, 258 IU alumni have received the DASA. This year, Rebecca Taylor Bingham, Louisville, Ky.; Patricia Peterson Danielson, New Castle; Jack Gill, Houston, Texas; Edgar Kettler, Fort Wayne; and George Rapp, Indianapolis, will be added to the roster of IU's finest grads.
