IU President Myles Brand and his wife, Peg Brand, an IU professor
of philosophy and of gender studies, hosted a senior send-off for
students and their families May 3 at Bryan House. Katherine Kellams
(second from left) received her bachelor of arts degree in apparel
merchandising the next day at commencement. Basking in the moment
are (left to right) Katherine’s parents, Chris Kellams and Marc
Kellams, a Monroe County circuit court judge; Sharon Brehm, chancellor
of the IU Bloomington campus, and Cora Smith Breckenridge of Elkhart,
an IU trustee.

Peg Brand and IU President Myles Brand greeted graduating seniors
and their families Friday evening at Bryan House during the traditional
“Senior Send Off.” Sara Messinger (right) brought along Zoe, her
dog, and her mother and stepfather, Nan and Steve Zinaman to say
hello. From Chappaqua, N.Y., Sara graduated from the business school
with a degree in finance.

Indiana University’s interfaith baccalaureate, held Friday afternoon,
May 3, in the IU Auditorium, was opened by senior Andy Kastner (above)
with a call to prayer blown on the shofar, a traditional Jewish
instrument made from a ram’s horn. This year’s baccalaureate reflected
the diversity of IU students by including readings and songs from
the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim faiths. The ceremony,
which officially opened IU’s 2002 commencement weekend, was closed
by Rev. Daniel Atkins of St. Paul Catholic Center with a message
of hope. “Go forth into the world in peace,” he told several hundred
students and their families. “Be strong and of good courage. Hold
fast to what is good. Amen.”
