Tuesday’s symposium at IUB to address problems, solutions
By Jayne Spencer

In these Hoosier groves of academe—the bucolic campuses of Indiana University—and at colleges and universities across America, what could be a happier and safer time than the years spent in pursuit of a higher education? What, after all, do students have to be stressed about?

The answer, of course, is plenty.

Those stresses will be addressed Tuesday (May 18) at a half-day event open to faculty and staff from campuses throughout the state. The 22nd annual university-wide spring symposium, sponsored by the IU Bloomington Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, will begin with registration at the Frangipani Room of the Indiana Memorial Union in Bloomington at 8:30 a.m.

The keynote address, “Psychological Concerns for Today’s College Students,” will be delivered by Robert Gallagher of the University of Pittsburgh. With more than 35 years as a practicing psychologist, administrator and educator, he brings experience to his presentation as the former vice chancellor for student affairs and former director of the University Counseling Center at Pitt. Currently, he teaches post-secondary counseling and professional ethics at the Pitt Graduate School of Education. Last year, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors and is a former president of International Association of Counseling Services.

Concurrent interest sessions (topics are listed below) will adjourn at noon. The Tudor Room has several tables in reserve for those participants wanting to extend discussions through lunch.
