Treat them as if they were one of your own

IU academic adviser Mary Ann Miller has a simple philosophy: She treats students as if they were her own children. Whether she’s meeting with a new student at freshmen orientation or helping a fourth-year biology major prep for the final semester, Miller keeps her two sons in mind.

“I’m not just here for advising. I tell students they can come in any time and just talk if they want,” said Miller, whose own sons, Justin and Adam, graduated from IU during the past year.

Miller’s service philosophy has garnered state-wide recognition. As an undergraduate adviser at the IUB Department of Biology, College of Arts and Sciences (COAS), she was recently cited by her peers as a superior professional. The Indiana Academic Advising Network named her its 2004 Outstanding Professional Adviser. The award came on the heels of another honor: the IUB 2004 Adviser of the Year Award. She’s been a biology adviser since 1998 and received the COAS honor during spring semester.

“It’s a rewarding job. I can’t think of anything more exciting. It’s a great feeling,” said Miller, describing her enthusiasm for working with IU students.
