| Indiana University’s Faculty Colloquium for Excellence in Teaching (FACET) will receive the 2003 John L. Blackburn Award for an Exemplary Model of Administrative Leadership from the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA) in ceremonies next month. AAUA recognizes outstanding examples of academic leadership that demonstrate creative solutions to common issues in higher education. The Blackburn Award for Exemplary Administrative Leadership is presented for the proposal judged best overall among proposals submitted for the Exemplary Models of Administrative Leadership Awards.
FACET’s Leadership Institute was cited for its role in the development of Centers for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on three IU campuses and in a university-wide diversity initiative. Sue Sciame-Giesecke, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at IU Kokomo; Eileen Bender, associate director of academic affairs at IU South Bend; and Barbara Cambridge, associate dean of the faculties for undergraduate education at IUPUI, have played key roles in the institute.
A model for a Faculty Leadership Institute was launched in 1996 to provide the foundation for designing new freshman learning programs, teaching strategies for large classes, strategic planning and diversity programs.
The AAUA award will be presented on June 20 in San Francisco. Giesecke, Bender and Sharon Hamilton, co-director of FACET, will be attending the event.
FACET is designed both to recognize and enhance outstanding teaching throughout the IU campuses and to promote continued development of teaching excellence among colleagues at IU and beyond.
