The United States had declared war on Germany during the springtime of 1917, entering World War I. Still, the tranquility of the Bloomington campus on commencement day a year later offered family and friends of graduates a chance to forget for a moment the conflict in the world. The straw-hatted commencement guests are pictured in this photograph from 1918, the final year of “The Great War.” The Allies saw many successes the summer of 1918 and on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was called. The 20th-century “teens” were a significant growing time for the university in many areas: the IU Alumni Association was formed (1913); the Training School for Nurses, later the School of Nursing, was established (1914); IU’s first “extension office” was opened in Indianapolis (1916); the Fort Wayne Extension Center opened (1917); and the Indianapolis School of Medicine Building was completed (1919).
