Network Indiana, a statewide news consortium, has recognized the WFIU News Department for its quality in news feature reporting and production.

WFIU’s Chad Bouchard received first place in the “best use of sound” category for his radio piece on the closing of Bud’s Sandwich Shop, a Bloomington landmark for more than three decades. He interviewed customers, recorded Bud opening the shop at four in the morning, (those crickets in the background are real crickets at four in the morning), and managed to capture the flavor and importance of a small-town business that has bucked the trend of “megaplexes” and box chain stores.

In the category “general news/feature report, WTIU’s Adam Schwartz took second-place honors for “Transient Students,” a feature on students at a Bloomington elementary school whose family situations, primarily economic, cause hardships in educational stability. Joanne Morton’s “Modern Music,” an interview with musician Rufus Wainright and his sister Martha Wainright about the changes in the music industry since the days of their father, Loudon Wainright, received an honorable mention.
