Join IU's legendary Harvey Phillips as he talks about the tuba, his years teaching at the IU School of Music in Bloomington and the founding of TUBASANTAS, with journalist Mary Campbell, in this edition of "Conversations online."
The Distinguished Professor emeritus has made the tuba famous throughout the world, beginning his music career as a teenager with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus Band. He was selected as principal tuba at the Hall of Fame Circus Band and a Hummel figurine, The Tuba Player, was created to honor Phillips.
Phillips co-founded TUBA, Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association, now known as ITEA, International Tuba Euphonium Association. In 1995, he was elected to the Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts, National Band Association. He also is the founder of the Harvey Phillips Foundation, Inc. which administers OCTUBAFEST, TUBACHRISTMAS and TUBASANTAS, to name a few of his tuba-centric initiatives. Campbell is a former writer for the Associated Press, having spent 40 years writing about music.
