WonderLab, IUB chemists to offer 'explosion of science' July 2

WonderLab Museum in Bloomington will offer an explosion of science fun on Saturday, July 2, with a special event, the "Chemistry of Fireworks," in partnership with the IUB Department of Chemistry.

The highlight of the day will be three spectacular shows on the chemistry of fireworks in the museum's WonderGarden (weather permitting) at 11 a.m., 1p.m. and again at 3 p.m. The shows will provide an exciting and vivid demonstration of the chemistry involved in Independence Day colors and explosions.

Each show will last approximately 45 minutes. Space is limited, and seats may be reserved as early as Tuesday, June 28. Detailed information about ticketing is available online at the Web site below. Parents should note that explosions during the shows may disturb young children and those sensitive to loud noises.

A variety of hands-on chemistry activity stations will be available inside the museum throughout the day. Activities for preschool-age children will focus on color changes and reactions, while activities for children, ages 5-10, will center on luminescence. Special activity stations for older children and teens will offer advanced chemistry activities involving flames and colors, flammable gasses and fire safety.

All shows and activities are available at no extra charge beyond museum admission due to the sponsorship of the Gregory Estes Chemistry Demonstration Fund. The fund was established by Bloomington residents Kay and Bill Estes in memory of their son, Gregory, for the purpose of highlighting the science of chemistry at WonderLab.
