Kara Lasher, an administrative staff member for the Summer Music Clinic, polished up a French horn earlier this summer for use in ensemble work by area youth, under the direction of School of Music faculty. Summers sizzle on the IU campuses with camps and opportunities abounding. Coming up: enjoy free band concerts on the lawn in front of the IUB MAC July 14, 21, 28; become a "bubbleologist" at the ninth annual WonderLab BubbleFest July 16; take in a retrospective of American musical theater classics at IPFW tonight through July 18 or check out IUPUI’s partnerships with Indiana Black Expo, which begins tomorrow in the Circle City.

Publications in print and online are more than grace notes when it comes to articulating IU’s missions, research and activities to diverse audiences. Check out some of the recent awards for professional excellence won by "pubsters" from campuses throughout the state.

Just one of those things

In 1965, when the Purdue University "School of the Air" produced a series of in-school radio programs on Indiana history, they tagged native sons Paul Dresser (On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away); Hoagy Carmichael (Stardust) and Cole Porter (Begin the Beguine) as the state’s most distinguished composers. Terre Haute’s Dresser composed Indiana’s state song in 1899, the same decade Porter of Peru and Carmichael of Bloomington were born. The two younger composers rejected law careers for their music, and this summer, a former IU theater student is portraying Porter on the silver screen.

Focus on philanthropy

A new report from the IU Center on Philanthropy finds that Hoosier non-profits are not prepared to perform their advocacy roles. In August, a national symposium in Indianapolis will address perspectives on the black community’s involvement in philanthropy.

Wear red and TimeTrek

The IU Alumni Association officially turns 150 years of age Aug. 1, and a jazz brunch at IU Northwest is scheduled that day. Look for ice cream socials on the Bloomington, Indianapolis and Columbus campuses at celebrations the following day and a chance to win a prize by completing a crossword puzzle by IU alum Will Shortz, the New York Times crossword puzzle editor. Don’t forget to check out the online TimeTrek through IU history, and get out those red socks!

Taking the reins

Marion Broome began her tenure as the fifth dean of the IU School of Nursing this month, and former HHE director Sue Talbot was elected to another term as an IU trustee.

Transitioning to a residential campus

For members of the Class of 2008, the great divide between the high school and the college experiences can be large, foreboding and full of pitfalls.
