A research community forum on social, behavioral, education and humanities research with human subjects is scheduled Oct. 20 at the Indiana Memorial Union on the IU Bloomington campus, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration is $50 and includes lunch and break service.

Sponsors are the IU Office of the Vice President for Research, the IU Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, and the U.S. Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). Opening remarks by IU law professor Ann Gellis, associate dean for research compliance, and Michael McRobbie, vice president for research at IU, will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Sessions will include a federal perspective on research involving human subjects, outlining key issues of concern to the OHRP and its investigators; exploration of social, cultural and ethical considerations; and information about identifying and managing risks. A panel discussion will examine issues involved in applying the federal definition of “research” to oral history, ethnography, folklore, journalism and education, moderated by George Pospisil of the OHRP. Following lunch, Pospisil will discuss perceived obstacles to research and Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects oversight.
