The University of Iowa has its public art project, Herky on Parade, installed throughout the campus to honor the 75th anniversary of Kinnick Stadium, and IPFW is planning its Mastodons on Parade art project to commemorate the Fort Wayne campus’ 40th year. (“Herky,” the Iowa Hawkeyes’ mascot, is short for Hercules. Six-feet-high depictions of Superman Herky, Harry Carey Herky, Phantom of the Opera Herky and 72 other Herkys dot the campus and its environs.) Artists interested in entering a design for Fort Wayne’s mastodon parade should refer to this Web site:

| This month, IPFW kicks off its 40th anniversary celebration, and everyone is invited.
In September 1964, IPFW opened its doors at its current location, in a combined campus for Indiana and Purdue universities in Fort Wayne. To mark the occasion and to thank the community for all its support over the years, a birthday party is planned Tuesday (Sept. 14), beginning at 5 p.m. in the plaza area between Walb Student Union and Helmke Library.
Irene Walters, executive director of university relations and communications, said the party will have something for everyone. The fun begins with music from local American Idol contestants as picnic-style food is served. Roving entertainers, some reputed to be high-level members of the IPFW administration, will dazzle party-goers with their feats of magic, juggling and other tricks. At 6:45 p.m. a life-size sculpture of a mastodon will be dedicated, and at 7:30 p.m. the Omnibus Lecture Series will feature The Capitol Steps. When the performance is over, everyone will be invited to cap off the celebration with a piece of birthday cake.
The birthday party is the first of many events planned to celebrate IPFW’s 40th anniversary, including a February party for children with 40 different activities, the return of Harbor Arbor Days in April and the appearance of Mastodons on Parade throughout the community in May.
