| Net surfers looking for information about Japan can find some unusual things on the National Clearinghouse for U.S.-Japan Studies Web page. Funds for the clearinghouse are provided by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Resources on the page include a newsletter for educators, lesson plans, databases and teaching resources, among other things.
The page also includes a couple of things just for fun.
“The Ogre Who Sank Down to the Bottom of the Sea” is a Kamishibai play from Japan, one of a long tradition of storytelling through pictures. Another activity is “The Daruma Challenge.” Its introduction says, “Fulfill your wish by taking the challenge! Daruma dolls are charms used to fulfill a wish, such as for success on a test. It is customary to paint one eye black when the wish is made; then paint the second eye after the wish is fulfilled.”
