The South Bend Tribune’s
Susan Dillman has joined the staff of the Indiana University Office
of the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations
as director of media relations. In that capacity, she will oversee
media relations for IU and serve as the university’s primary spokesperson.
Dillman formerly served as Indianapolis bureau chief for the South
Bend Tribune, covering the Indiana General Assembly, state and
appellate courts, the executive branch of state government and state
agencies.
“Indiana University has an incredible story to tell, and I look forward to being a member of the talented and dedicated team that works to get that message out,” Dillman said.
An IU alumna, Dillman is known to many Hoosiers statewide as a panelist
on the weekly public television program, Indiana Week in Review,
and as a past field reporter and consultant to the Indiana Lawmakers
television program. She also has done reporting for WNIT-Channel 34
in Elkhart.
“Advocating for my university was about the only calling that could have pried me away from journalism,” Dillman said. “Like so many alumni, I value IU’s reputation because it is tied to my own. I understand and share that special pride we have in our sch
ool.”
“We’re very excited to have Susan coming back to her alma mater to spearhead our media relations efforts,” said IU President Myles Brand. “During her years covering Indiana state government, she has earned an impressive reputation for fairness, honesty an
d accuracy. She has an in-depth knowledge of the media in Indiana and a thorough understanding of the issues facing our state and our university. Susan is the ideal person to help tell IU’s story.”
While enrolled at IU as a journalism and criminal justice major, Dillman
began her career as a reporter for the former Bloomington Herald-Telephone.
After graduation, she went to work as a reporter for the Elkhart
Truth and eventually became a columnist and the paper’s political
reporter. She joined the South Bend Tribune in 1988.
“Our media relations effort has never been more important,” said Christopher Simpson, IU vice president for public affairs and government relations.” Susan brings us a tremendous background in the media and politics in Indiana, and we hope she will help b
uild on our media relations successes of the past to take us to the next level.”
