On Sept. 30, 1950, IU’s WFIU went on the air, some 50 years after Guglielmo Marconi’s tuner brought radio to the world. Rolla Roy Ramsey, an IU physics professor, had been experimenting with the wonders of radio earlier in the century,
sparking the first concerted calls for a campus radio station. Ramsey (standing, far left) amazed this audience of students and faculty by capturing fragments of music and voices in a demonstration Jan. 5, 1922.
