Full-body suits for Olympian swimmers? Ho-hum

By Jayne Spencer
IUB exercise physiologist Joel Stager, who also is editor of the Journal of Swimming Research, made some heavy-duty predictions about how swimmers would fare at the Sydney Olympics in research conducted at the Human Performance Laboratory at the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Using the top swimming times for more than 30 years to predict the winning times at the Olympics in Australia, some predictions panned out, others didn’t.

Among Stager’s findings:

•“It’s simply not true that women swimmers peak in their teenage years. American college-age and post-college women now dominate the sport, whereas years ago it was dominated by junior high school girls.”

• He discounts the effect of the new full-body swimsuits as an important factor in times.
