150 years after the
Dred Scott decision
After 11 years of litigation that began in St. Louis Circuit Court, the U.S. Supreme Court in March 1857 denied Dred Scott and his family their freedom, claiming that neither free blacks nor slaves could be U.S. citizens, that slaves were, in fact, "personal property" and thus lacked civil rights to bring a federal suit in the first place.
