IU’s Murray McGibbon has been awarded a Naledi Award, South Africa’s prestigious award, in the Best Production of a Revue category, for “Black Mamba,” which he directed in Durban last year. The South African equivalent of the Tony Awards, the Naledi Awards were presented in February during a nationally televised ceremony at Johannesburg.

Starring Ben Voss and John Van der Ruit, two of South Africa’s top comedy actors, the show has been playing for 22 months and is now on its second cast. The Johannesburg ceremony featured Voss and Van der Ruitin. “Black Mamba” also received two additional nominations, in the Best Cutting Edge Production and Best Revue Production categories.

The Naledi Theatre Awards covered all mainstream professional live theater productions produced during 2006. “Black Mamba” was in competition with more than 60 productions requiring the talents of more than 1,000 writers, directors, actors, designers and technicians.

Prior to 2002, South Africa’s top theater awards were called the Vita Awards, and McGibbon has been the recipient of five.
