The life sciences. A capital idea!

Any field of study that contributes to the better health of living organisms, including humans, plants and animals, is a life science. The push to create a world-class life sciences industry in Indiana is well in the making, with government officials, academics, researchers, entrepreneurs and CEOs all involved in providing knowledge transfer to current and future Hoosier life science stakeholders.

    Camp Whatdoyawannado

Camp A family adventure in Wisconsin, a day or sleep-over camp for the kids or an enrichment class to break up your own work day: we’ve gathered a few of our favorite things in a camp directory.

    The Sheridan dig

Chris Glidden is directing the IUPUI summer archeological dig in Hamilton County and is recruiting volunteers in addition to class members, to come to the Sheridan site and doing some real-world archeology (you may wear your Indiana Jones hat if you wish). The dig will have three historical interests: pioneer and African-American archaeology, and the investigation of a suspected station on the Underground Railroad.

    Insider’s art tip

Shallow Creek Psssstttt. Come closer. The Bloomington campus will be a little less bustling after tomorrow’s commencement. It’s the perfect time to stop by the IU Art Museum’s special exhibitions, through May 18, the date of its culminating Jordan River Fest. Hear more about the museum at WFIU podcasts and click on “Angles of the IU Art Museum.”

    Obsolescence

When the Merriams trekked through Africa in the early ‘50s to record war songs, they used their trusty reel-to-reel. Deteriorating tape and obsolescent machinery put the collection at risk, but IU and Harvard are using NEH grants to create new standards to digitally preserve such endangered sound recordings.

    Small town,big art

Masterworks Henry Hope, Tom Solley and Herman Wells had a vision many decades ago: IU students should see art in Bloomington akin to the collections contained in the repositories of major cities. That vision has come to pass and is chronicled in a new book, Masterworks of the IU Art Museum. The cover features a mural (above) by renowned American modernist Stuart Davis, which, according to legend, was hauled “home” by Solley from a Cincinnati garage.

    Regis at IUSB

Shoes Notre Dame alumnus Regis Philbin loves his alma mater, but when he hit the air April 21 for his syndicated TV show, Live with Regis and Kelly, his effusive opening was all about his weekend gig at IU South Bend and the art work of IUSB’s Lucas Eggers.

    ROTC rocks!

ROTC Bloomington’s ROTC was recently ranked at the top program in the 9th ROTC Brigade, which covers four states, and as one of the top five in the nation. Meet some of the men and women who received their military commissions this morning at the IMU in Bloomington; they are the subject of IU photojournalist Chris Meyer’s video, taped at Camp Atterbury during spring break. Also meet ROTC’s MPC, who was recently presented with a prestigious Army citation for civilian service.
