Karen Hanson, provost and executive vice president of IU Bloomington, welcomed friends, family and colleagues of the recipients of the 2008 IU Bloomington Staff Merit Award winners Dec. 15 at the Indiana Memorial Union for a reception honoring the 29th annual award conferral.
Research

The IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in Bloomington is broadening its work in the Dominican Republic to include two new field laboratories at which students and faculty will work with local communities to address critical health and tourism-related economic development needs.
Technology

A group of the nation's largest research libraries are collaborating to create a repository of their vast digital collections, including millions of books. The holdings will be archived and preserved in a single repository called the HathiTrust. Materials in the public domain will be available for reading online.
Outreach

Cans Across America took in more than two tons of food on the IU Bloomington campus last semester and IUPUI "jammed the bus" with another three tons. On Nov. 12, IU Bloomington's Indiana Memorial Union joined with college campuses across the country for the "food-raising" event, Cans Across America. IU's can drive was organized by Indiana Memorial Union Dining Services in conjunction with the Sodexo Foundation and the STOP Hunger initiative. Cans Across America was introduced at colleges across the U.S. in 2006.
Health

The IU School of Optometry's $3 million Atwater Eye Care Center swung into full-time operation Jan. 5 at its new campus-centric, high profile location on East Third Street in Bloomington.

IU President Michael McRobbie has directed all IU vice presidents, chancellors and deans to immediately reduce their operating budgets by at least $4.9 million through the remainder of the current fiscal year.
Arts & Humanities

The Lilly Library announced in November that Deborah Meier, considered the founder of the small-schools movement in the U.S., will donate her personal papers to the library's collection.
Events

The Lilly Library is celebrating Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday in 2009 with the exhibition Remembering Lincoln on display from Jan. 26 through May 9.
