Headliners

You'll find IU newsmakers all over the web any day of the year, but if you've worked on your tan more than your reading list, here's a synopsis of some recent stories we thought you might enjoy.
Arts & Humanities
The College of Arts and Sciences on the Bloomington campus is getting ready to launch 40 related courses this fall that will tie into themes of diversity and evolution. The initiative coincides with the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of the Species and the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth.
Research

During the last 65 million years, mammals have expanded in diversity and number, and that success may have led to the contraction of their genomes.
Technology

Moving forward with its new strategic IT plan, Empowering People, IU will become the first major, multi-campus university in the nation to elevate constituent communications to a university-wide platform inclusive of all schools, its alumni association and its foundation.
Today's feature
How do IU employees add to their quality of life when off the clock? For IU Bloomington Physical Plant's Andrew Lowry, his avocation is a labor of love, and payday isn't far from his own backdoor in Springville, where a lot of four-legged mammals depend on his good care. Similarly, on campus -- and particularly with the beginning of the academic year fast approaching -- his duties are key to the multi-faceted service element: he provides oversight of administrative duties relative to the Physical Plant Building Systems Group, which designs, engineers and maintains many of the sub-systems within the campus' teaching, research and student life facilities. Events

Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, Guildenstern, Polonius and the Three Witches, among others, are on the docket for grilling by Intensive Freshman Seminar students Aug. 20 in Bloomington. The mock trial will be rollicking, with faculty playing the roles of the defendants.
Health

A lemon shake-up, an amusement ride and a trip to the chicken and duck barn are all great family activities with the opening of the Indiana State Fair. But did you know about the healthy "freebies?" (Such as: a UV bracelet that turns color to warn of overexposure to the sun.) Stop by the Clarian Healthy Lifestyles Pavilion on the southwest side of the fairgrounds in Indianapolis.
FYI

IU alumni re-elect Dr. Philip Eskew, the governor appoints a student trustee and a slate of officers have been nominated.
Outreach
Yes, it's a riff on speed dating and rejection is not an option. A town-gown collaboration in Bloomington is matching volunteers with nonprofits.
