Breaking Away

(Top) The film Breaking Away, released in 1979 and voted in the "Ten Top Ten" list of classic American sports films of all time by the American Film Institute, included young stars (left to right) Jackie Earle Haley, Daniel Stern, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Christopher; (middle photos) Filming on the IU Bloomington campus, the city, country roads and a local quarry (below left) required many extras from the community and cameo roles for several IU administrators; (bottom right) Christopher was the captain of the Cutters team, the group of "townies" who took the trophy. He was also the young dreamer who affected an Italian accent and serenaded his love interest in front of the Tri Delt house on East Third Street.
