•Fourth-year IU medical student Ben Meyer will be cycling across the U.S. as a member of a group of medical professionals on a Ride for World Health team to raise money for two grassroots world health organizations, Esperanca and Village Health Works. They will be cycling from San Diego to Washington D.C., in April and May, riding 3,700miles to raise awareness of current public health issues and to generate funds for the two groups. His goal is to raise $2,500 in donations. Those interested in supporting this non-profit organization with a tax deductible donation may contact Meyer at meyerbj@gmail.com.

Science Olympiad

•What is it like to peer into the world of genetics and use the same sophisticated tools world-class researchers have to better understand and develop treatments and cures of complex diseases?

Fifty Indiana high-school students got the opportunity March 1-2 at the 10th anniversary of the Molecular Medicine in Action program at the IU School of Medicine and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The students worked alongside some of the nation's top researchers in the labs of the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research on the IUPUI campus.

Packets will be mailed in mid-September to Indiana's high schools and science teachers will be able to select students for participation. There is an online application form at this web site: www.wellscenter.iupui.edu/MMIA, with a deadline for submission of Oct. 31. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of Indiana biology and chemistry teachers, and selections will be made and students notified by Dec. 15.

•IU East will initiate a new four-year degree program next fall to provide students the necessary knowledge and skills for careers in information technology. The bachelor of science degree in informatics program will provide students with technical and analytical skills that can be applied in a variety of industries, organizations and professions.
