IU East
The Richmond campus presented several faculty and staff with awards for their service to the university during the Honors Convocation ceremony April 16. Chancellor Nasser Paydar and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Larry Richards presented select members of the IU East faculty with awards during the program. Alisa Clapp-Itnyre, assistant professor of English, received the Helen Lees Award for Excellence in Teaching. The Helen Lees Award was established in 1991. Professor Emeritus Lees passed away in 1992, but her spirit continues in the award IU East presents each year. It is to honor a full-time faculty member who has taught at least 10 semesters at IU East. Jerry Wilde, associate professor of educational psychology, received the Award for Excellence in Research. The award recognizes excellence in research and/or creative work by a full-time faculty member over a sustained period of time.
Mary Folkerth, clinical assistant professor of nursing, received the Distinguished Faculty Service Award which recognizes distinguished service, either one-time or sustained, by a full-time faculty member above and beyond the expectations of any compensation or release time provided for the service. Tom Thomas, associate professor of fine arts, received the Chancellor's Faculty Award. for outstanding all-around achievement, either short-term or sustained, by an IU East faculty member, and can be awarded for any combination of research, teaching and service.
John Oak Dalton joined the campus as director of communications and marketing in April. He most recently was station director of Whitewater Community Television. Prior to coming to Richmond, Dalton worked 16 years at Ball State University in various capacities in television, educational media and information technology.
Dennis Hicks, registrar, attended the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), held April 13-16 in Chicago. Hicks' presentation on "How to Train Your Campus on FERPA: 'It Can Be Done!'" was recorded as a webinar for institutions unable to send representatives to the annual meeting. Hicks is the AACRAO chair of the ethics task force and vice chair of the 2009-2010 nominations and elections committee.
Tony Shepherd, executive director of the Area 9 Agency, has been appointed to the Indiana Strategic Oral Health Initiative Statewide Planning Council. The IU School of Dentistry will be developing a strategic oral health plan for the Indiana State Department of Health with recommendations and strategies to improve accessibility of the oral health workforce for the underserved statewide. Shepherd will concentrate on geriatric oral health-care needs and serve on the safety network group.
