M. Jay Gladden has been appointed dean of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, pending approval of IU's trustees. He comes to the post from the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he has served as associate dean for the last two years. Gladden succeeds P. Nicholas Kellum who is stepping down as dean of the school, the country's oldest school of physical education, which also has one of the country's newest programs to train professionals in the areas of tourism, conventions and event management.

E. Jane Luzar has been appointed the founding dean of the IUPUI Honors College, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, beginning July 1. She has been serving the University of Fliorida as associate dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

At the University of Florida, Luzar has responsibility for student services and programs for over 4,000 graduate and undergraduate students in CALS. She also administered the college's distance education program and off-campus academic programs. She administered and regularly taught in the CALS Upper Division Honors Program and participated in development of UF's First Year Florida freshman experience program.

Outstanding faculty and staff were recognized and honored April 17 at the Chancellor's Academic Honors Convocation, a formal, robed ceremony presided over by Chancellor Charles Bantz and Vice Chancellor Uday Sukhatme.

Among the award recipients were: Carol Hostetter, School of Social Work, the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching Full Time; Richard Ward, professor of anthropology, the Alvin S. Bynum Award for Excellence in Academic Mentoring for Faculty; Maureen Kinney, assistant director for undergraduate programs and academic adviser, Kelley School of Business, the Alvin S. Bynum Award for Excellence in Academic Mentoring for Staff; John Nurnberger, Joyce and Iver Small Professor of psychiatry, the Glenn W. Irwin Jr. M.D. Research Scholar; Frederick Bein, professor of geography, the Chancellor's Faculty Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement; Kurt Kroenke, professor of medicine, Obioma Nnaemeka, professor of world languages and cultures, Marianne Wokeck, professor of history, the Chancellor's Professorships.

Jeffrey Xavier Watt, associate professor of mathematics and associate chair of the Department of Mathematical Science, was presented with the Distinguished University Teaching of Mathematics Award by the Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America during the group's spring meeting in March. As the associate chair of the department, Watt has responsibility for the undergraduate math curriculum with enrollments of 12,900 students each year and oversees the education of the 190 undergraduate math majors in pure, applied, actuarial and math education options.
